Editorial: National school standards may help Georgia

Considered broadly, a uniform nationwide set of academic standards for this county's K-12 students, unveiled late last week by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, appears to have the potential of being a useful tool for establishing clear expectations for this country's public schools, and for allowing states to compare their schools' performance with other states in a meaningful way.

The standards, which the NGA and the CCSSO take pains to note were developed without input from the federal Department of Education, but with input from parents' and teachers' organizations, seem rigorous enough, and have gained the support of dozens of major U.S. companies - which, of course, also are major employers.

The language arts standards, for example, "mandate certain critical types of content for all students, including classic myths and stories from around the world, foundational U.S. documents, seminal works of American literature, and the writings of Shakespeare," according to www.corestandards.org, the website detailing the nationwide initiative.

By way of a brief further example, mathematics standards for grades K-5 are designed, according to the website, to "provide detailed guidance to teachers on how to navigate their way through knotty topics such as fractions, negative numbers, and geometry, and do so by maintaining a continuous progression from grade to grade."

There appears to be widespread support for the standards among the states, with media reports from late last week indicating that all but one or two states have signed on. That may not be as good a piece of news as it might seem, though, because there is no timeline for states to implement the standards. In fact, it may be that some states have adopted the standards simply to get a shot at the next round of federal Race to the Top money, $4 billion in taxpayer dollars set to be parceled out among states that have applied for the funds.
